Early goals bring rousing win for Sway
Sway 3 Netley Central Sports 1
Hampshire Premier League Division 1
Saturday 22nd October 2016
Sway came flying out of the blocks and dominated the early stages of the game in glorious sunshine at Jubilee Field. Darren Ritchie and Ashley Booker dominated the midfield and Sway deservedly took an early lead when Ryan Brading gathered the ball on the edge of the box and fired into the bottom left-hand corner. The home side went further ahead when Dan Brennan headed in from a well-placed corner. This appeared to spur Netley into action and Sway's debutant 'keeper, Harry Greenwood, began to see more action, including tipping the ball around the far post to prevent what looked like a certain goal.
But Sway continued to produce some good football. Dan Brennan, in particular, was troubling the visitors with well-directed balls out of defence. From one of these moves Sway rattled the far post and Jake Bockhart was on hand to turn the rebound into the net. Shortly afterwards, Sway nearly made it 4-0 with a similar move but this time the Netley 'keeper produced a fine save from Ryan Brading's header.
The second half was a different affair as the visitors came out with great determination and quickly reduced the arrears when their number nine brought down the ball at the edge of the box and gave Greenwood no chance with a powerful shot. Sway continued to press and could have had a penalty when Darren Ritchie was deemed to have gone down too easily as he tried to round the Netley defender. Ryan O'Reilly and Brennan stood firm in defence as Netley began to dominate an increasingly feisty game. Chances fell to both sides but it was Sway who found the back of the net; however, the referee asked for O'Reilly's cheeky quick free-kick to be retaken.
Sway finished strongly with Jordan Rogers breaking through, only to be blocked by the on-rushing 'keeper and Ritchie narrowly missing from a far-post header.
The result leaves Sway fourth in the league with their next game at home to second-place Upham.
Sway: Harry Greenwood, Darren Ritchie, Joe Petty, Ash Booker, Jake Bockhart, Mark Brading, Ryan Brading, Dan Brennan, Ryan O'Reilly, Jordan Scares, Ben McQuoid; Subs: Jordan Rogers, John Huggins, Luke Thurston
