To Infinity but not beyond
Sway Reserves 0 Infinity 3
Hampshire Intermediate Cup - Rd 1
Saturday 3rd October
Sway Reserves hosted Hampshire Premier League opposition with the visit of Infinity in the Hampshire Intermediate cup.
In a cautious opening Sway held their own against their higher league opponents and created the clearer chances.
In a period when Sway forced 3 consecutive corners Hillyer had a goal bound volley deflected wide and Larcombe had a header blocked on the line.
After 20 minutes, however, Infinity took the lead against the run of play. Another Sway corner was cleared to the halfway line and indecision amongst the covering defenders left the Infinity forwards 2 on 1 and they took full advantage.
Infinity then began to control the game and Sway did well to limit them to long range efforts that Barrowdale in the Sway goal was able to deal with comfortably.
As the half came to a close Haffenden won a free kick out wide which Douik delivered perfectly into the box but Hillyer was unable to direct his header on goal.
The second half started with both sides being positive. Infinity always looked the more dangerous and nearly extended their lead with a 25 yard strike that hit the outside of the post. After Sway had nearly equalised when speculative Haffenden effort had cleared the bar, they went further behind after a good run and right wing cross was forced into the goal.
Sway tried to respond and good work by Douik and Haffenden set up Chillcott but his shot was well blocked by the keeper. Any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Infinity extended the lead from the penalty spot after Ritchie was adjusted to have impeded the forward when he was just about to shoot.
Sway were even denied what would have been a deserved consolation when sub Hillyar beat the keeper to Ritchie's lobbed cross only to see his header bounce over the bar.
Sway Res Team: J Borrowdale. S Quinn. S Hillyer. D Larcombe. J Crouch. A Clark. T Ritchie. A Gates. H Douik. J Chillcott. B Haffenden. Subs: F Jenkins. M Hillyar. J Waller.
