Early lapses costly for Reserves
Bournemouth Hayward League Division 1
AFC Burton 4 Sway Reserves 1
Saturday 10th October
Sway Reserves visited table topping Burton with a reorganised team due to player unavailability. They made the worse possible start when Burton took the lead with their first attack after just two minutes, breaking down the left wing and crossing for the centre forward to score thanks to a wicked bobble off the uneven ground over the despairing keeper, Borrowdale.
Burton then took control of the game and put the Sway defence under constant pressure missing two clear headers from corners when they looked certain to score. Sway finally started to get into the game and after 15 minutes created their first chance when a Ritchie free-kick caused chaos in the home defence before falling for Larcombe who volleyed a goal-bound shot from six yards that the keeper did brilliantly to block.
As the half wore on Sway looked more dangerous with both Chillcott and Haffenden having opportunities to equalise only to be denied by the Burton keeper. Burton remained dangerous on the break and Borrowdale was having another excellent game in the Sway goal with vital blocks to keep his team in the game.
All Sway's hard work was ruined after the break as again they started poorly and Burton were able to extend their lead within a couple of minutes as lapse defending left left two attackers free to score. Sway tried to respond immediately and Gates and Haffenden had speculative long-range efforts that the keeper saved comfortably. Burton broke away on 55 minutes to score a third goal and five minutes later scored a fourth as the Sway defence started to look tired and disorganised.
When it looked like Burton could run away with the game Sway regrouped and had their most impressive spell of the game. Hillyar, Chillcott and Haffenden all looked dangerous without being able to force any clear cut chances but Sway never gave up and their effort and work-rate were rewarded with ten minutes remaining when Ritchie curled a free-kick superbly into the top corner of the net to reduce the arrears.
Sway: J Borrowdale. L Miller. J Langdown. S Hillyer. D Larcombe. S Quinn. T Ritchie. A Gates. M Hillyar. J Chillcott. B Haffenden.
Subs: D Goth. A Russell. P Nineham
