Sway secure second place
Sway 4 Lyndhurst 1
Hampshire Premier League Division 1
Saturday 11th March 2017
With Upham dropping two points at home to M&T, Sway are now guaranteed second place in Division 1 following our 4-1 win at home to Lyndhurst.
The Reds went ahead early on when Darren Ritchie headed in from close range following a game of head tennis in the visitors' penalty box. We were soon 2-0 up in similar fashion when David Steadman headed back Ash Booker's free-kick into the unstoppable path of a flying Dan Brennan. Booker nearly grabbed one for himself when set through one-on-one but the keeper made a great save. Our third was laid on a plate for Ryan Brading as he intercepted a poor clearance and expertly rounded the keeper to put Sway in control. Sway threatened from numerous corners but it was a Lyndhurst corner that led to the next goal. After clearing off the line, Sway failed to clear their lines and the visitors put away the loose ball. Ritchie nearly bagged a second when he latched on to a long through ball from Steadman but he could not find the target.
Lyndhurst came out quickly from the second-half blocks and Matt Langdown had bring out an excellent save to maintain our two-goal lead. Sway then took control with Ritchie and Booker dominating midfield and creating a host of chances. The introduction of the mercurial Ryan O'Reilly added renewed impetus: he nearly broke the keeper's fingers when he volleyed a corner ball from 40 yards out. Our fourth goal came from one of Steadman's runs down the right flank; this time his cross was met by a diving defender who somehow delivered a perfect near-post header into his own net.
Sway: Langdown, Ritchie (c), Churchill, Lambert, Petty, Huggins, Brennan, Booker, Steadman, M.Brading, R.Brading. Subs. Scares, McQuoid, O'Reilly
