Reserves storm through to Final
Sway Reserves 3 Parley Sports 1
M.A. Hart Poole Bay Cup Semi Final
Saturday 4th February
Sway Reserves had to fight back from an early setback at the King George 5th Playing Fields to book a place in the final of the Poole Bay Cup.
Sway were under the cosh from the beginning, when former Sway player, Gareth Barnes, flicked on to set up Ben Mowlam to score in 40 seconds. But Sway battled back and took the control of the game, with Dan Marks showing good composure in midfield. Bill Stride had several chances but Sway’s most dangerous attacks came through Joel Fields, who was causing havoc down the left flank. One of these runs saw the ball finding Jack Herbert who made no mistake from the edge of the box to level the scores.
Parley tried to regain control but they were reduced to long shots as Sway’s defence stood firm, with Lee Gilbert in commanding form. Chris Forbes came closest to taking a first-half lead when his shot slid past the right-hand post.
Parley started strongly in the second half but soon found themselves 2-1 down when, against the run of play, the ball fell to Herbert who charged forward and doubled his tally with a 40-yard screamer. He nearly grabbed a hat-trick moments later but Parley’s keeper was alert to the danger.
In an unusual role with the gloves, Ryan Shepherd had to be equally alert in the Sway goal, making a great save from close range. At the other end, Fields continued to threaten and had a shout for a penalty when brought down in the box, but referee, Andre Linford, was unmoved. Fields was involved again as his cross was parried into the net by an unfortunate defender, putting the game out of Parley's reach.
The win sets up an interesting tie in April, when Bournemouth First Division Sway will be up against Premier high-fliers Bournemouth Manor.
Sway Reserves: Ryan Shepherd, Rhys Williams, Paul Jordan, Nick Broom, Chris Forbes, Lee Gilbert, Dan Marks, Bill Stride, Tom Linbourne, Jack Herbert, Joel Fields. Substitutes: Lee Baxter, Jack Frankcom, Tom Linbourne.
