Nasty injury spoils impressive cup win
Colden Common 1 Sway 4
Puma Engineering League Cup 1st Round
Saturday 10th September
The day got off to a bad start for Sway with several players failing to turn up, leaving us with the bare 11 players against premier league opposition. But it was Sway who started the brighter. A crunching tackle by Dan Marks in the opening minutes, which took everything out including the corner flag, set the tone for the visitors for the rest of the game. We opened the scoring on 19 minutes when Jake Bockhart sidestepped a defender on the edge of the box and curled a great strike into the top corner. Soon after that, Mark Brading headed narrowly wide and a stinging shot from Ryan Brading was brilliantly saved by Common's keeper. After 25 minutes, Sway went further ahead when Bockhart's corner was met by the unmarked Brennan at the far post whose thumping header gave the keeper no chance. Sway were now in total control with Darren Ritchie and Chris Huggins dictating play in the midfield and it was to no surprise when, on 41 minutes, we increased our lead when Rogers converted from close range following some great play by the Brading brothers down the right flank. Just before half-time, Sway were reduced to ten men when our senior star player Ben Johnson fell awkwardly after attempting to hurdle a sliding tackle by Ritchie which left him requiring hospital treatment for a badly broken arm.
The second half was a more even affair, possession wise, but despite our lack of numbers, we still created the better chances. Joe Petty and man-of-the-match Dan Brennan were superb in central defence. However, Common reduced the lead when their number 8 hit a stunning volley from 25 yards into the top corner. Two strikes then by Ryan Brading and Jordan Rogers struck post and bar respectively before Sway made the game safe when Ritchie ran on to a fine through-ball from Bockhart to confidently slot home from 12 yards to complete an outstanding display by the Sway team.
Sway: Matt Langdown, Dan Marks, Joe Petty, Dan Brennan, Ben Johnson, Jake Bockhart, Darren Ritchie {capt}, John Huggins, Jordan Rogers, Mark Brading, Ryan Brading.
