Sway thwarted by outstanding goalkeeping display
Headley 1 Sway 1
Hampshire Premier League Division 1
13th August 2016
Sway undertook the long journey to Headley on the Hampshire Surrey border with high expectations for the season. Sway expected Headley, who decided to drop down from the Premier League for various reasons, to be tough opposition for their opener. Fielding eight new signings in our squad, Sway started the brighter but went a goal down against the run of play when a sudden breakaway saw the centre-forward get between Brennan and Lambert to calmly slot home. Sway controlled much of the half with Ritchie, Brockart, Marks and Brennan all going close and the Headley 'keeper bringing off a string of superb saves. Sway finally got their just reward on 40 minutes when Scares' excellent free kick found the bottom corner of the net.
The second half continued in the same fashion with Sway pressing from the start. Brockart was causing havoc down the left flank and had a string of chances; only to be denied on each occasion by some outstanding keeping. In the 70th minute Lambert and the Headley's number 9 squared up to one another, resulting in Lambert receiving a Red Card and surprisingly the Headley player only getting yellow. Despite being down to ten men, Sway so nearly took the lead soon after when Bockart's free kick smashed against the post. From the rebound, the Headley keeper made two outstanding saves, both point blank headers from Ritchie who could only hold his head in disbelief.
In the closing minutes, Bockart saw another free-kick smash against the post signifying that it just wasn't to be Sway's day.
Sway: Langdown, Scares, Brennan, Lambert, Marks, Bockart, Blake, Petty, McQuoid, Ritchie, Rogers. Subs Brading, Brandreth
