Reserves draw in final home fixture

Sway Reserves completed their final home game of the season on Saturday with a tight encounter against Holt Reserves.
Sway started the more positive and controlled possession without initially creating any clear-cut chances. The closest to a break-through came in the opening 15 minutes when Adam Gates just beat the keeper to a good cross from James Pritchard but was unable to direct his header on target. An even better opportunity fell to Jamie Chillcott who met a fine cross from Hisham Douik at the far post but the Holt keeper blocked his shot superbly.
The Holt defence held firm to the Sway pressure and restricted them to long-range efforts. First a speculative shot from Steve Hillyer was fired wide after he carried the ball from his own half. Then Gates was unable to lob the keeper from 20 yards after spotting him off his line following a fine through ball from Fergus Jenkins.
At the other end Holt were unable to create any clear chances as Pritchard and Hillyer marshalled the Sway defence superbly with Jon Waller and James Crouch also having strong games in the full-back positions.
At the half-time break Sway had to replace the dominant Pritchard who was troubled by an injury but his replacement Paul Cole slotted in well and the second half started along the same pattern as the first with Sway in the ascendancy.
First Cole met a Waller free-kick to head over then Hillyar had a spectacular overhead kick following a corner blocked by the defender with Sway appeals for a penalty for handball turned away. Sway continued to press and create the better chances with Douik volleying over after being set up by good play by Hillyar and Jenkins and then Matt Hillyar fired off-target following a break from the right-wing.
As the game wore on and players tired, it became more end-to-end with both sides looking for the victory. Holt were now starting to create chances of their own and Sway were again grateful to Josh Borrowdale who made important saves to stop us going behind; first blocking from a close-range effort following a corner and then superbly tipping a ball past the post from an effort from the edge of the box.
The final effort of the game came from a Tom Ritchie volley after a corner was only half cleared. But this failed to trouble the keeper and the game ended goalless.
Sway Res:- J Borrowdale. J Waller. J Pritchard. S Hillyer. J Crouch. F Jenkins. H Douik. T Ritchie. M Hillyar. J Chillcott, A Gates.
subs:- P Cole. A Russell. L Miller. R Old. P Nineham
