Reserves trounce Poppies in Pickford Cup
Pickford Cup Round 3
Bournemouth Poppies Reserves 1 Sway Reserves 6
31st October
Sway started slowly with Poppies making the first effort on goal from a 25 yard free kick that cleared the bar. But Sway soon took control going close on two occasions when Hillyar and then Stride were sent clear. The deadlock was broken after a quarter of an hour when Hillyar and Stride combined well on the left to free Chillcott. Realising the angle was tight, he pulled the ball back to Gates who coolly squared the ball to Haffenden to fire home.
This goal gave Sway the confidence to dominate the game and they increased their lead after 25 minutes. Ritchie chased what appeared to be a lost cause, forcing the defender to concede possession enabling him to cross for Stride to fire home from close range.
As the half drew to a close Sway extended their lead further. Quinn won the ball in the centre before sending Stride away with a pin-point pass that split the square home defence. Stride made no mistake slotting the ball past the advancing keeper to secure a 3-0 half-time lead.
Poppies responded with some early pressure after the break but great covering blocks by Quinn and the newly-added Tang prevented them from reducing the arrears.
Sway always looked dangerous, however, and Hillyar increased our lead with a superb header after a great cross from the right by Haffenden.
Poppies heads then started to drop and Sway looked like scoring with every attack. Hillyar fired over following good play by Gates and Chillcott. Even more profligate was Stride, first when Jenkins' through-ball sent him clear and then from two headers when he looked certain to complete his hat-trick.
But Sway youngster, Fergus Jenkins showed how to do it, darting in front of the defender and 'keeper to head home Hillyar's cross for his first senior goal.
Poppies gained a consolation goal when they broke away and the forward produced a superb chip over the advancing Barrowdale.
Sway regained their 5 goal lead, however, when Mahy went on a mazy run in the area only to be fouled. Chillcott coolly converted from the penalty spot.
Sway Res: J Borrowdale, S Quinn, A Clark, S Hillyer, J Waller, B Haffenden, T Ritchie, A Gates, M Hillyar, J Chillcott, B Stride. Subs: M Tang, F Jenkins, P Mahy
