Westover made to work in Poole Bay Cup
Poole Bay Cup
Sway Reserves 1 Westover Bournemouth 3
Saturday 24th October
Sway Reserves gave Bournemouth Premier League Westover a run for their money in the Poole Bay Cup finally loosing out in the last five minutes after taking an early lead.
Sway started the better of the two sides with Haffenden getting an early opportunity but shooting wide from the edge of the area. Adam Gates, restored to number nine after many years, then sent Chillcott through on goal but the 'keeper saved well at the expense of a corner. The resulting corner from Chillcot found Gates unmarked who made no mistake with a powerful header.
This appeared to wake up Westover who responded with more possession but failed to trouble the Sway defence who restricted the visitors to long-range efforts that either sailed over the bar or were dealt with comfortably by Borrowdale between the sticks.
Sway continued to create opportunities at the other end and threatened to extend their lead, first with a Haffenden header that went wide and then through Chillcott who was unable to convert when sent through on the 'keeper after good work by Gates and Waller.
Just as it looked like Sway were going to take their lead into the half time break, Westover equalised when their forward broke down the right flank and cut inside to fire low into the net.
The second half was almost a mirror image of the first as Westover dominated both in possession and chances created. Sway were restricted to trying to break out of defence but their higher league opponents gave them little opportunity and kept constant pressure on the Sway goal.
Sway defended resolutely, with Quinn and Waller making two unbelievable goal-line clearances to stop what looked like certain goals.
Westover were not to be denied, however, and with just 5 minutes left took the lead after a long-range effort was parried out and the forward was the quickest to react and fired home.
Sway had no option then but to send men forward in search of an equaliser but Westover broke through again in the final minute to extend their lead.
Sway Res: J Borrowdale. S Quinn. J Crouch. S Hillyer. D Larcombe. J Waller. T Ritchie. A Clark. B Haffenden. J Chillcott. A Gates. Subs. P Mahy. R Whitcombe. L Miller.
