Fairhurst double seals Sway win
Hampshire Premier League Division 1
Sway 2 Four Marks 1
Saturday 17th October
Two goals from Dan Fairhurst earned the Reds their third league win of the season.
Sway welcomed third place Four Marks to Jubilee, who included the league's leading goal scorer. Sway dominated the first half with a majority of possession, forcing numerous chances but were unable to find the net. The game became feisty with many free kicks, giving the referee a lot to do; firstly issuing a yellow for Sway, then a straight red for the visitors after 33 minutes. Sway piled on the pressure which paid dividends when Fairhurst unleashed a dipping 30 yard shot which nestled in the top of the net to give Sway the lead. Four Marks continued to press, always looking dangerous, but the home defence stood firm. On the stroke of half-time, Sway went close to extending their lead after rattling the visitors cross bar.
Four Marks seemed to regroup at the interval and forced several early corners. But 'keeper Langdown pulled off several excellent saves to keep the ball out. Sway's first attack almost saw a Four Marks defender score an own goal from a wicked low cross, but the resultant corner saw Brennan head wide. The visitors continued to press and Sway were grateful to see Gilbert head away under pressure in the six-yard box when two strikers were bearing down on him. A deliberate pass-back handed Sway an indirect free kick 16 yards out but the visitors snuffed out the resultant kick. Four Marks were gifted a penalty with 15 minutes left when sloppy defending led to Brennan scything the striker down just inside the box; and the score was levelled. Sway pushed forward on a regular basis but were left exposed at the back and Four Marks were unlucky not to take the lead, especially from a viciously struck free-kick in the 85th minute. With minutes to go, Sway forced two corners. The second saw the ball fall to Fairhurst and his looping bicycle kick eluded the keeper and fell into the net to wrap up all three points for Sway.
